When should I place an account for collection?
Placement of any account is a discretionary issue. There are several factors to consider before sending an account to collection. These factors include: the tenure of the customer relationship, the reasons given for non-payment, buying activity of the customer and the nature of the offense, ie; are there NSF checks pending deposit? The general "rule of thumb" is that when you reach the point of diminishing returns, where your best efforts are no longer producing results, turn the account over for professional recovery in an attempt to reduce your risk.
What if I receive a customer payment after an account is placed for collection?
If you have turned an account over for collection it is possible that the customer could make payment to our office or to yours. If you receive any payment, offset or return for credit, contact our office immediately. If possible, fax a copy of the payment to us. If the payment is a post dated check or some other type of timed payment, forward the check to us for processing. All future payment should be directed to our offices.
What if I receive a customer call after the account is placed for collection?
Now is the time to exercise control. The customer who once dodged your calls, now wants to seemingly resolve this issue with you. Do not speak with the customer concerning the account and refer them directly to our offices to discuss the account. Having a singular representative at this time can make all the difference to the full recovery of an account. |
